What is Zofran?
Zofran (also known by its generic name ondansetron) is a drug used to combat the symptoms of nausea that patients can experience while undergoing chemotherapy or after surgery.
How Does it Work?
The drug impedes serotonin in certain parts of the brain that can prompt nausea and vomiting.
Who is Responsible?
Created by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the pharmaceutical company began advertising the medication as a viable treatment option for dealing with morning sickness during a pregnancy from 2002 to 2004 . However, the drug has never been cleared for use for pregnant woman and there are no positive studies with pregnant women.
FDA Reports
The FDA has received at least 500 reports of birth defects that have been traced to the use of Zofran. Your child may have been affected by the use of Zofran during pregnancy if they were born with:
- Congenital Heart Defects
- Cleft Lip
- Cleft Palate
- Kidney Malformation
- Other Birth Defects.
