The federal judge in San Francisco who has overseen past federal lawsuits involving the glyphosate product Roundup has ordered its manufacturer Bayer AG to begin mediation with a plaintiff.
Cancelling Trial Date for Mediation
According to an article posted by The Detroit News (via Bloomberg), U.S. Federal District Judge Vince Chhabria cancelled an upcoming trial date set for May 20, 2019 commenting that resources are better spent in mediation rather than trial. However there is a chance that if the parties are unable to agree on a settlement, a trial could be back on.
Refusing to Settle
Bayer AG who is the parent company of Monsanto who makes Roundup have come out publicly saying that they will not settle with plaintiffs, even as the number of pending Roundup cases has hit upwards of 10,000.
A Dangerous Product
Many people have filed lawsuits against Bayer AG claiming that their exposure to Roundup has caused them to develop non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a very serious form of cancer. There have been notable wins for plaintiffs: among them Dewayne Johnson who received a $289 million dollar verdict at the state level (read more about his case here).
