Today’s blog post is going to look at the possible signs and symptoms of one form of cancer: Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma or NHL.
What is NHL (Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma)?
NHL is a form of cancer that develops within your lymphatic system or the system in your body that helps you fight off disease and illness. The cancer forms within a certain type of white blood cell known as lymphocytes.
What are the symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?
According to an article from the Mayo Clinic, symptoms that could suggest the presence of NHL are:
Painless yet swollen lymph nodes
Abdominal pain or swelling of the area
Chest pain, coughing, or breathing issues
Long term fatigue
Fever
Night Sweats
Rapid or unexplained weight loss
Causes of NHL?
Doctors are unsure of the exact reasons behind the development of NHL. Studies suggest that it may be due to a weakened immune system. The cancer produces an abnormal amount of lymphocytes that can start in either the B cells or T cells which are types of white blood cells that help your body fight off infection.
Who is at risk?
Some people may be at a higher risk for developing NHL if they:
Are exposed to chemicals in weed killer products (like Roundup)
Take medications that weaken your body’s ability to fight off infection
Have certain viruses or bacteria (such as HIV which weakens your immune system)
Are of older age (the risk for developing this type of cancer increases with age).
