Wrangling Weeds: To Pull or Spray?

With the weather warming up and summer just around the corner, you may be thinking about getting outside and working on your garden. As any gardener will tell you, fighting weeds can be frustrating and time-consuming. Here are some things to keep in mind before you decide to run out and grab the nearest weed-killing product.

What Is It?

While many chemical herbicide products boast about their ability to take care of weeds fast, research is still ongoing about the impact these chemicals have on us as people and our environment. Glyphosate which is a popular herbicide was recently named to be a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Homemade Approach to Weeds

Using a homemade recipe such as vinegar and boiling water can save you money and can be more convenient as those are two ingredients you may have in your home already.

Keep Your Soil Healthy

Using an herbicide can often lead to the product being left over in the soil even after the weed has been taken care of. This can potentially affect how other non-weed plants are able to grow within the soil. While it can get scratchy at times, consider hand-pulling weeds to keep your soil healthy and inviting for new plants.

Layering Up

If you decide to use an herbicide consider adding extra layers to protect yourself from coming into direct contact with the chemical on your skin. Working with a chemical product should always be used with caution and special care. Consider using the non-chemical options above so you can ditch the extra clothing and not worry about possible contamination.
