Roundup Claims Stand Now at 13,400

Bayer AG, the company that now owns Monsanto Corp., has reported 13,400 filed Roundup claims against them involving the commercial herbicide.

Roundup Claims Hit New High

Since the company bought Monsanto last summer, legal issues have followed. A few weeks after the purchase of Monsanto was complete, the company was hit with a $289 million dollar verdict over a lawsuit filed by Dewayne Johnson a groundskeeper from California who has been diagnosed with terminal non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that was allegedly caused by Roundup. Another $80 million dollar verdict in federal court was recently awarded to Edwin Hardeman.

Uncertain Future

With the most recent verdict in the Roundup lawsuits being given out in favor of the plaintiffs – to the tune of $2 billion dollars, it remains to be seen how this verdict will continue to impact the thousands of other pending Roundup lawsuits. Bayer AG released a statement after the verdict was announced saying they would file an appeal.

An Monsanto-Sized Headache

At a shareholders meeting in Germany, investors made their unhappiness known over the Monsanto deal by holding a no-confidence vote against Bayer AG CEO, Werner Baumann. Despite the backlash, the board of directors have decided to continue to put their faith in the CEO.
